Transport sharing costs

The formula for helping drivers pay for petrol is currently 33 cents per kilometre (changed May 2017).

In practical terms this means you divide the kilometres you have travelled by 3 and then divide by the number of people in the car including the driver. The resulting figure is the dollar rate each person pays the driver.

For some car-pooling trips you might consider calculating the costs based on the total number of cars and riders so that everyone pays the same and all drivers receive the same.

  1. Divide the kilometres you have travelled by 3 and then divide by the total number of people in the cars including the drivers.
  2. Multiply by the number of cars. This is the amount everyone pays, including the drivers.
  3. Once everyone has paid the same amount to a nominated collector, split the total equally between the drivers.

Don't forget to share toll costs as well.
